Robert Taylor Marathon on Wednesday June 5 on TCM (USA)

Turner Classic Movies is playing eight Robert Taylor films on Wednesday, June 5, starting at 6 a.m.  Seven of the movies are consecutive and the eighth is later.  June 5 is three days before the anniversary of Mr. Taylor’s death from lung cancer on June 8, 1969. He was only 57.

I’ve noted which movies are said to be closed captioned but I  have been disappointed by this so no guarantees.  Reviews are by Leonard Maltin.

????Camille (1937) is playing on Turner Classic Movies on Wed, June 05, 2013 06:00 AM est.Beautiful MGM production; in one of her most famous roles, Garbo is Dumas’ tragic heroine who must sacrifice her own happiness in order to prove her love. Taylor is a bit stiff as Armand [not true], but Daniell is a superb villain. Closed captioned.

RT7952Three Comrades (1938) is playing on Turner Classic Movies on Wed, June 05, 2013 08:00 AM est. Beautifully poignant film of Erich Maria Remarque’s tale of post-WW1 Germany, and three life-long friends who share a love for dying Sullavan. Excellent performances all around; co-scripted by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  Closed Captioned.

????Waterloo Bridge (1940) is playing on Turner Classic Movies on Wed, June 05, 2013 10:00 AM est.  Sentimental love story, well acted, of soldier and ballet dancer meeting during London air raid, falling in love instantly. Cleaned-up version of the Robert E. Sherwood play, with beautiful performance by lovely Leigh. Closed Captioned.

RT1485Flight Command (1940) is playing on Turner Classic Movies on Wed, June 05, 2013 12:00 PM est.  Hackneyed story with good cast as upstart Taylor tries to make the grade in naval flight squadron. Closed captioned.

RT2320When Ladies Meet (1941) is playing on Turner Classic Movies on Wed, June 05, 2013 02:00 PM est.  Attractive performers in remake of 1933 movie based on Rachel Crothers’ play. Authoress Crawford loves Marshall, who’s married to Garson; Taylor loves Joan. Taylor and Garson try to bring life to film, but can’t.

HW14 High Wall (1948) is playing on Turner Classic Movies on Wed, June 05, 2013 04:00 PM est.  Well-paced thriller in which ex-bomber-pilot-war-hero Taylor thinks he has murdered his two-timing wife and attempts to piece together the facts with the help of psychiatrist Totter. Closed captioned.  One of my top two Taylor favorites.

????Westward the Women (1952) is playing on Turner Classic Movies on Wed, June 05, 2013 06:00 PM est. Intriguing Western with Taylor heading wagon train full of females bound for California to meet mail-order husbands. Based on a story by Frank Capra. Closed captioned

RT4418

Devil’s Doorway (1950) is playing on Turner Classic Movies on Wed, June 05, 2013 11:30 PM est.  Well-turned Western with offbeat casting of Taylor as Indian who served in Civil War, returning home to find that he must fight to right the injustices done against his people.  Closed captioned.

About giraffe44

I became a Robert Taylor fan at the age of 15 when his TV show, "The Detectives" premiered. My mother wanted to watch it because she remembered Mr. Taylor from the thirties. I took one look and that was it. I spent the rest of my high school career watching Robert Taylor movies on late night TV, buying photos of him, making scrapbooks and being a typical teenager. College, marriage and career intervened. I remember being sad when Mr. Taylor died. I mailed two huge scrapbooks to Ursula Thiess. I hope she got them. Time passed, retirement, moving to Florida. Then in 2012 my husband Fred pointed that there were two Robert Taylor movies that evening on Turner Classic Movies--"Ivanhoe" and "Quentin Durward." I watched both and it happened all over again. I started this blog both for fans and for people who didn't know about Robert Taylor. As the blog passes 200,000 views I'm delighted that so many people have come by and hope it will help preserve the legacy of this fine actor and equally good man.

I don’t but I will put up a post when it comes up again. There are also commercial DVDs available for as little as $5. Take a look at Amazon.

  3. Sue says:

Thank you! (And I will check those DVDs out.) IMHO, this version of “Camille” is one of the top 10 movies of all time…and that is saying something! Greta Garbo at her finest. And Robert Taylor in this is to die for. Oh, to have a man love me like THAT!
